I looked at Kechyan’s hyperrealistic “Orange” and wanted to reproduce the liveliness, but on canvas, not wood.

A large study based on Bouguereau’s “Irene,” using charcoal, not oil. The size and textured black-and-white rendition create something leaner and more sombre than the original. Bouguereau is a favorite.

My first Rembrandt study! The Dutch Renaissance may not be as well known, but their innovations in light and everyday themes show an entirely different, and perhaps more Protestant, response to exiting the Middle Ages.
